Common Commencement Dates survey

05 March 2013

A Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI) survey seeking views from local businesses on the future direction of business regulations has now closed

Northern Ireland regulations which impact on businesses are currently introduced as and when considered appropriate or necessary by the Departmental Minister responsible.

In contrast the UK Government operates a Common Commencement Dates policy, whereby regulations are introduced on only one of two pre-defined dates each year:

  • 6 April
  • 1 October

Under the Northern Ireland Better Regulation Strategy Review 2009, the Northern Ireland Executive committed to seek the views of local businesses on whether they would prefer to:

  • retain the current approach in Northern Ireland
  • introduce a Common Commencement Dates policy for Northern Ireland-made regulations

DETI is keen to get the views of as many Northern Ireland businesses as possible. The survey ran from Friday 1 March 2013 until Friday 22 March 2013, but has now closed. The responses will inform the development of policy to be announced at a future date.
