Summary:

Invent is Catalyst's annual competition that showcases and rewards local innovations and proof of concept ideas with the greatest commercial potential. 

Eligibility criteria:
  • You may or may not have incorporated a company.
  • If you have incorporated a company you must have no more than five paid employees.
  • Intellectual Property must be owned by you or your company or you must have appropriate permission from the owner to enter the competition.
  • Technology development must be based in Northern Ireland.
  • Technologies that have previously qualified for the final round of INVENT and former £25K Awards are not eligible to apply.
  • You must have at least developed a basic prototype which can be in digital or physical form.
  • Applicants must disclose any funding already received.
  • At the point of application, applicants must not have received over the value of £200,000 from any institutional venture capital equity funding or business angel investor for the idea (prototype/technology/invention) being entered.
  • Institutional venture capital funding includes seed stage and development stage equity investment funds managed by a fund manager.
  • Institutional funding does not include any of the following types of funding: funds from contests, grants, proof-of-concept grants, friends and family, bank loans, angel equity investment, crowd-funding platforms, funding for academic research.

There is an opportunity for enthusiastic and passionate innovators and entrepreneurs across Northern Ireland to be part of a unique competition that helps to unlock the potential of innovative ideas.

The competition showcases and rewards local innovations and proof of concept ideas that have the greatest commercial potential. It is an opportunity to gain high-profile exposure, to validate your idea and to unlock a quality network of influencers. There’s also a prize fund of £33,000 shared by the winners. 

Every year, six category winners and one overall winner are chosen. Categories include Agri Science, Engineering, Life & Health, Enterprise software, Electronics and Creative & Consumer Internet.

If selected as an Invent finalist, you will be involved in preparation sessions including a funding day and mentor day ahead of your final pitch.
