Brexit: future of carbon pricing consultation

News article

Business views sought on the design of a future carbon pricing scheme once the UK leaves the EU

Carbon pricing is a tool for achieving carbon emissions reductions targets. The current European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) affects installations in industrial sectors which produce significant quantities of greenhouse gases.

As the UK leaves the EU, a replacement system for UK emissions trading will need to be agreed, designed and implemented.

The UK Government and Devolved Administrations have launched a consultation on future options for alternatives to the EU ETS. The system will operate across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Your views are sought around four key topic areas:

  • design of a UK ETS
  • operation of a UK ETS
  • aviation
  • continued UK Membership of the EU ETS for Phase IV

How to respond
You can find out more about the consultation and download supporting guidance on the Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs website.
