Consultation on a Waste Management Plan for Northern Ireland

04 December 2019

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) is seeking views on the draft Waste Management Plan for Northern Ireland

Businesses are invited to express views on the proposed Waste Management Plan for Northern Ireland (WMPNI).

The WMPNI is a compilation of existing waste management information, plans and policies. It needed to meet the requirements of the revised Waste Framework Directive 2008 (rWFD).

There are local waste management policies which, taken together, deliver the objectives of the rWFD to protect the environment and human health by:

  • preventing or reducing adverse impacts of the generation and management of waste
  • reducing overall impacts of resource use and improving efficiency

The core aim of the WMPNI is to bring current waste management policies under the umbrella of one national plan.

The purpose of the consultation is to determine whether the WMPNI, when combined with waste planning policy, fulfills Northern Ireland's obligations under the rWFD.

You can find out more about the consultation and how to respond on the DAERA website.

You can download a copy of the draft Waste Management Plan for Northern Ireland (PDF, 997K).

The consultation closes at 16:00 on Wednesday 11 December 2019.
