Plans to introduce Parental Bereavement Leave and Pay in Northern Ireland

21 May 2020

The Economy Minister Diane Dodds has announced that she plans to bring forward legislation for Parental Bereavement Leave and Pay in Northern Ireland

Parental Bereavement Leave and Pay, when introduced in Northern Ireland, would entitle eligible workers to a certain amount of leave and pay following a child’s death. This would bring Northern Ireland in line with the rest of the UK where Parental Bereavement Leave and Pay is already in effect.

The Department for the Economy (DfE) will now proceed with a consultation on Parental Bereavement Leave and Pay. The consultation will be published on the DfE and nidirect website. We will link to it once it is live. Any new legislation will also require approval by the NI Assembly.
