File your Self Assessment tax return and pay your tax bill by 31 January 2024

News article

Are you prepared for the online Self Assessment tax return and payment deadline of midnight on Wednesday 31 January 2024?

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is reminding Self Assessment customers that the countdown to complete their tax return has begun.

The deadline for filing your Self Assessment tax return online and paying the tax you owe for the 2022 to 2023 tax year is 11:59pm on Wednesday 31 January 2024.

The benefit of filing early

HMRC is encouraging customers to complete their Self Assessment tax return as soon as they can, so they know what they owe and can budget to make the payment by 31 January 2024. This also means that if a repayment is due it can be claimed back sooner.

Support to pay your tax bill

Self Assessment customers can pay through the HMRC app. If customers cannot pay in full, HMRC wants to help them to find an affordable way for them to pay the tax they owe. If customers owe less than £30,000, they may be able to set up a Time to Pay arrangement. See HMRC's guidance on the full list of ways to pay any tax owed.

No longer need to complete a tax return?

If anyone thinks they no longer need to complete a Self Assessment tax return for the 2022 to 2023 tax year, they should tell HMRC as soon as possible to avoid any penalties. HMRC has produced two videos explaining how customers can go online and stop Self Assessment if they are self-employed and those who are not self-employed:
