Views sought on proposed plans for the first United Kingdom plant varieties and seeds strategy

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), the Scottish Government, the Welsh Government and the Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) are working together to develop a United Kingdom Plant Varieties and Seeds (PVS) Strategy spanning five years. They are inviting ideas from any interested parties to feed into the strategy.

The policy area of PVS covers Plant Variety Rights (intellectual property rights of plant breeders), plant variety registration, setting standards for marketing and certification of seed and other plant propagating material and ensuring that these standards are upheld.

This will be the first strategy in the PVS area and is an opportunity to engage with industry and other stakeholders to set out a shared vision, priorities, and actions to achieve these. The strategy is intended to be a means of setting direction, providing an overall framework to support prioritisation and provide clarity.

Find out more about the consultation and how to respond.

The call for ideas will be open until Monday 19 December 2022.
