Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Programme
A subsidised partnership linking a business, a graduate, and a university or college to deliver strategic innovation projects that drive growth.
Who it is for
This support is available to all Northern Ireland businesses but may be subject to some eligibility criteria.
Projects should be transformative, driving strategic change and boosting commercial performance focusing on business areas such as:
- strategy and business modelling
- process or operational improvements
- leadership and decision-making
- skills development
Support you can get
There are different types of KTPs, each addressing a specific need:
- classic KTPs: help build better products and services
- management KTPs: help build better businesses
Each KTP solves a specific challenge by transferring knowledge, technology, and expertise from the academic partner (a university or a further education college) to the business.
Funded by Innovate UK and Invest Northern Ireland, each KTP places a skilled graduate, called a KTP Associate, in the business for 12 to 36 months. The Associate works with the business on innovative solutions, guided by the academic partner.
The level of funding provided depends on the size of the business:
- small and medium-sized business: up to 67% of the project costs
- large business: up to 50% of the project costs
The business benefits from the transfer of knowledge and expertise, as well as access to fresh talent, new technologies, specialist facilities and technical expertise. The academic partner gains a better understanding of business needs, and the graduate gains valuable industry experience and potential employment opportunities.
