Non-Executive Director Scheme

Support for businesses to improve leadership by appointing an experienced, independent Non-Executive Director to their company board.

Who it is for

The scheme is open to Invest Northern Ireland clients, which are manufacturing and/or tradeable services businesses with the potential to both:

  • achieve at least 25% of sales outside of Northern Ireland (or at least £250,000, whichever is lower)
  • employ at least ten staff within five years

If your business meets these criteria, you may be eligible to apply to become an Invest NI client.

To join the scheme, your business must also:

  • be registered as a limited or unlimited company in Northern Ireland
  • have turnover of at least £500,000, with 25% export sales (or commit to reach this during the project)
  • have an existing company board or want to create one

Support you can get

A NED will provide advice and support to help your business improve strategic decisions, board operations, and leadership.

By participating in the Non-Executive Director Scheme, you can benefit from:

  • advisory support to identify and engage an independent/external NED
  • financial support up to £10,000 or 49% of eligible costs, whichever is the lesser
  • a two-year engagement, typically 12-24 days per annum

How to apply

To take part in the scheme, your business must:

  • select and appoint the NED
  • define the project scop with the NED
  • submit your NED Scheme application to Invest NI for support
  • agree terms and conditions for the NED’s appointment and confirm with a formal engagement letter
