Explore hydrogen in transport opportunities in Germany

Innovate UK is welcoming applications to their latest Global Business Innovation Programme (GBIP), focusing on exploiting hydrogen opportunities in the German market.

Applications are open to UK-based, innovation-led businesses developing cutting-edge hydrogen technologies for the transport sector. Eligible projects should focus on one or more of the following areas:

  • Transport use cases - including road and rail freight, public transport, local authority-owned HGVs, maritime, and aviation. Both the UK and Germany have identified industrial decarbonisation as a strategic priority.
  • Hydrogen infrastructure - including the refuelling, transportation, and storage of hydrogen to support its wider adoption in transport.

Hydrogen production is not being considered for this GBIP.

The programme consists of a ‘Get ready’ preparation phase, a 5-day innovation visit to Germany focused on hydrogen in transport, an ‘Exploit the opportunity’ workshop and support from Innovate UK innovation and growth specialists, helping businesses develop innovation projects with partners in the territory.

Why Germany?

Germany is one of the leading countries in Europe for hydrogen technology. It has strong government support, with a well-funded national plan to grow the hydrogen sector. Big companies and car makers are already using hydrogen in different ways, and there’s a strong focus on research, with many institutions working on new ideas. Germany also wants to work with other countries and grow its hydrogen exports.

Why should you apply?

Taking part in this GBIP will allow you to explore hydrogen in transport opportunities, gain a better understanding of doing business in Germany, engage with potential innovation collaborators and partners and develop your network in the UK, Germany and globally.

Innovate UK will fund and organise flights, accommodation, in-market travel, and conference fees for successful applicants, and will also pay for any reasonable adjustments throughout the initiative.
