Free British Library support to help NI businesses grow
Start and scale your business with support from the British Library
Businesses across Northern Ireland can access free support from the British Library to help them grow, innovate and reach new markets. This includes the Get Ready for Business Growth programme and masterclasses from the Business and Intellectual Property Centre.
Get Ready for Business Growth
This programme offers practical support, expert advice and mentoring for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) at every stage of their journey.
There are three ways to get involved.
1. Scale-Up Programme
For businesses already trading and ready to expand, the Scale-Up Programme offers a free three-month course of online workshops, bespoke research, and one-to-one guidance from top business experts. The programme covers key topics such as strategy, marketing, branding, finance, innovation, and intellectual property.
To be eligible, businesses must be UK-based, have been trading for at least one year, with an annual turnover of more than £80,000.
Applications open quarterly through to December 2026. The next deadline is Thursday 4 December 2025 for the January to March 2026 cohort.

2. Mentoring Programme
For growing small businesses, the Mentoring Programme provides six months of support from experienced SME owners. Mentees receive guidance on setting goals, solving challenges, and building confidence.
To be eligible, businesses must be based in the UK, registered with Companies House or as a sole trader for at least six months, have a live website, and a minimum turnover of £10,000.
The next application window opens on 5 January 2026 and closes on 2 February 2026. The programme will run from March to August 2026.

3. Start-Up Stars
If you're thinking of starting a business or have recently launched one, the British Library's Start-Up Stars quarterly events are a great place to begin. These free sessions bring together panels of entrepreneurs to share real-life stories and advice.
The next event in the series, Building a Business as a Disabled Entrepreneur, will take place on Thursday 20 November 2025, in person and online.
Business and IP Centre masterclasses
The British Library's Business and IP Centre network offers extra support for business owners through an extensive masterclass programme, providing free workshops for anyone starting or growing a business.
Sessions cover topics from business planning, finance, fundraising, and intellectual property. Anyone can join - sessions are available online and in person.
