What to expect from a health and safety visit

How to complain about a health and safety inspector

If you believe that the inspector has acted unreasonably, you have the right to complain.

If your inspector is from the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) you should contact the Services Divisions, who will investigate your complaint and tell you what they will do about it.

To make a complaint you should write to:

Head of Services Division
The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland
83 Ladas Drive
Belfast
BT6 9FR

Alternatively, email: policy@hseni.gov.uk.

If you are still not satisfied you can:

  • write to the Chief Executive of the HSENI
  • write to your MP to ask them to take up your case with the HSENI, government ministers or the Northern Ireland Ombudsman

Find out how to make a complaint about HSENI.

If your inspector is from your local authority you should speak or write to the inspector's manager who will investigate your complaint and tell you what they will do about it. See local council contact details in Northern Ireland.

If you are still not satisfied you can:

  • use your local authority's formal complaints procedure
  • write to your MP
  • contact the Northern Ireland Ombudsman
